The Purification Finale

The Purification Finale

This week marks the end of the Standard Process Purification Program.  We only had a few causalities, but they will resume in January with the next group.  I really don’t give anyone a chance for an excuse to not do the program.   And the participants who tried to excuse themselves from the program were grateful for the push to continue and finish.  It gives me so much joy to watch the growth of the group as they successfully complete each week.  Many had no clue how dangerous sugar and trans fats are to the body or how to even determine that these substances were in the foods they previously had been consuming.  Those “ah-ha” moments are fun to watch as a teacher.  And as Maya Angelou said, “When you know better, you have to do better”.  Each week information was given to create health and wellness for the future of each participant.  I feel it is an important approach to their success.

As chiropractic physicians, we are really the pioneers for nutrition.  We understand that most chronic disease has a root problem.  We are already in the position to promote wellness and good health thru eating foods that are nutrition rich and fiber dense.  The Standard Process Purification Program is the perfect opportunity to present this concept to patients.  This 21 day program helps to make the one degree of change that will affect each participant for the rest of his/her life.  More importantly the affect spreads to their families, friends and co-workers.  I have overheard the discussion of many of the participants in the waiting room of my office, sharing their new found knowledge and recommending the Purification Program to unsuspecting patients.  And the tales told by others about how they cleaned out the refrigerator of all High Fructose Corn Syrup products, engaging the whole family into making a change.  Still others, who were initially shocked about how much sugar is in the foods in their cabinets at home, drastically ridding their homes of sugar laden products.
I always ask participants to tell me what their “one degree of change” will be or how the program affected them for the future.  It makes my heart all warm and fuzzy when they tell me what those things are and how life changing the program was for them.  It fulfills my mission statement of getting my patients well and keeping them healthy.

                                                Week Four of My Journey

There was a bittersweet energy as we gathered for our last weigh-in and meeting.  I was excited about all my accomplishments, yet sad that I wouldn’t have the weekly accountability or community.  My final result for the twenty-one days was a nine pound loss and a three percent decrease in my body fat.  But my biggest accomplishment was giving up coffee.  I never thought I would be able to or would even want to.  Remember, I enjoyed coffee so much, I drank it black.  I would even go as far as to say I had an addiction. It feels great to be free of it, not to mention the side effects of sound sleep and morning energy!

During this class we learned how to transition properly into our new norm.  We learned the order of how to re-introduce items such as grains, dairy, and nuts into our diets.  Dr. B explained to us the difference between an allergic reaction and intolerance.  Which I got to experience personally when I decided to eat grains, as I had an immediate reaction.  I always knew that I didn’t really want to eat grains, but now that my body is clean I am clear as to why I don’t want to.

We also discussed the importance of supplemental support post-detox.  What to take, where to get it, and why.  Most over-the- counter vitamins and supplements are fractionated, contain synthetic ingredients, and a lot of fish oil supplements are rancid.

We learned many things over the 21 days, but the most important lessons I learned are that I am stronger than I thought, that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to, and things aren’t as hard as they sometimes appear.  At the time I agreed to participate in this program, I was in the middle of a life crisis and depressed.  I kept coming up with reasons not to do the program and Dr. B stood firm that as “exactly why I needed it.”  Although I couldn’t see it on day one, I can now tell you she was exactly right!  My depression has lifted, my thoughts are clear, I have more energy, and for the first time in years I am excited about life!  Thank you Dr. B for not only helping me get my life back, but get the one I’ve  dreamed of - a healthy lifestyle that has me in integrity with my  life purpose.

Here are some testimonials from this group that you have followed:

"Who knew processed food and regular decaf coffee and diet soft drinks were so bad? I had even been following a diet given to patients at a nationwide medical weight loss center! Dr. B. read over their diet plan and saw it was mostly food that turned quickly into sugar with only a small bit of protein. With just 21 days on Standard Process Detox I got a healthier body and mind. I don't stress eat junk food. People notice I look thinner which is also way cool. Sipping red wine during dinner instead of guzzling huge glasses of ice water during my evening meal is a real treat."  L.G.

"I did this as a reboot... I was doing well ,eating healthy ,and exercising on a regular basis for quite awhile and then I just feel off the wagon may of this year and instantly I began to feel tired all the time and just felt like crap and eating very unhealthy so when I heard about this detox/cleanse it was boost/kick in the butt I needed to get back on track... I experienced more energy weight loss and what was a great bonus for me clearer skin ... I had my doubt's at first but so glad I did this!!!" C.R.

"As a direct result of the liver purification program, I am sleeping better than I have slept in years! No melatonin needed anymore. Sleeping better has led to me an overall sense of feeling better.
I had no idea the "healthy" food I was eating was making me so bloated until those foods were removed during the program. My husband and I plan on keeping to the recommended foods after the program is complete....with the "occasional" added treat of course. We miss pizza and pasta but have found very creative and delicious ways to substitute vegetables for the starchy parts.
Our new BFF - "The Spiralizer"!
I am VERY HAPPY to report we have both lost over 7 pound as the "side effect". We plan on doing this cleanse twice a year. I knew my body could feel better, I just wasn't sure what it needed. With the help of Baystreet Wellness, we now have a complete plan....and it's working!! Thank you Dr. B for sharing your knowledge. A 1% change really does make a difference!" A. & D.R.

"The detox program was definitely a success for me! Not only do I feel more energy, I lost 8 pounds that I have been trying to shed for over a half of year. I started on the new vitamin supplement today and feel great!! Love that is all natural! Thank you for the new nutrition information. I learned so much and want to continue learning for myself, family and patients!!"  DR. K.S.

"Well, it's the last day of my 21 day detox. I did it. I can't believe I did it! I wasn't perfect, but I did really well. I lost 10 pounds and feel really good. I feel lighter, healthier. I can wear clothes that i haven't worn in a long time. I learned a lot about eating healthier and Scott and I have been more invested in what we eat and when. Due to our weight loss and how good we feel, we are both motivated to keep up with our new healthier eating habits. It wasn't always easy. There were times when I wanted a Mellow Mushroom Pizza really BAD. Surprisingly, it wasn't the sugar that I craved (which I always thought I was addicted to) as much as the snack foods like salsa and chips, guacamole and chips, mixed nuts. Oh, and the ice cream. I really, really wanted some Ben & Jerry's - BAD. We can't wait to have a glass of wine. And I look forward to having some of those foods that I love, but now I have really healthy recipes, thanks to Dr. Besuden, that I can make myself with fresh, organic ingredients. I know now how satisfying a meal with just vegetables can be. In the beginning, I thought taking so many capsules a day was going to be awful, but it really wasn't. We just got used to it. I also felt I had a lot of support from Dr. Besuden between the classes and the Facebook pages, and being able to contact her via email. I'm really glad I did it." S.H.

You have had the chance to experience the Standard Process Purification Program through many of my participants.  January is just around the corner... Be clean in 2015!

Purification Program Week Three

Standard Process Purification Program

Week Three

Click here for Week Three Video

Everyone has survived fourteen days of change.  For some the changes have been drastic.  For others the changes are creating a new normal.  All involved have done one thing....lost weight!  Those skinny jeans are just around the corner.  Truthfully the changes are really deep.  Listening to the participants as they rejoice in another win after getting off the scale is one thing.  Most importantly, the changes in the discussions as they wait for the class to begin.  A common thread of conversation is how easy it has been to learn, experiment and enjoy eating healthy, organic meals.  They agree  that this 21 day process will lead to a "new normal" after the program has completed.  They are trying vegetables and fruits that they have never eaten before or prepared as a meal.  Even cooking and creating meals from recipes by those who always ate out every night.  As well figuring out how to survive going to social events and stay with the Program.

Each week I have prepared food, ie, Creamy Alfredo Cauliflower Sauce with Zoodles and Broccoli Asparagus Soup, to allow the group to taste great food that is healthy and a creative way to present it as a meal.  They are able to experience the  use of veggies and fruit in a way other than just steaming or eating them raw.  I get such joy to watch the doubters sample my creations and be shocked of the flavors and that the ingredients are "legal" on the Purification Program.  Also foods that you would have never thought of at different meals.  This morning I prepared "Sweet Potato Pancakes with blueberries" which were quite tasty, despite me making a mess in the kitchen.  And it was legal on the Purification Program.

Week Three of My Journey

With a new week comes another weigh-in.  This week I step on the scale more confident than last week.  As Dr. B’s assistant places the weights in the right place, she says  “you lost three more pounds. Six pounds to date.”  I was pleased, yet disappointed.  I was hoping for more of a loss.  When talking with Dr. B, we went over where I could have made better choices and it came down to that I didn’t exercise but once that week.  I was frustrated that yet once again I allowed the craziness of my life to take priority over self-care.  I am trying to be kind to myself, acknowledge the lesson, and take positive steps to do better.

During this week I have discovered that living this way long-term is easier than I thought, as long as you have a plan and are prepared.  I have been having fun experimenting with the recipes we get from class, cookbooks, and peers.  I had some big hits like Dr. B’s Famous Guacamole and Balsamic Chicken, and some not-so-great attempts at other recipes.

Class is always insightful.  This week we talked about the importance of reading labels.  Just because a label claims to be “fat free” or “sugar free” doesn’t mean it’s true.  See there are all sorts of sneaky ways manufacturers can hide ingredients, if you are not aware of what to look for.  We also learned the benefits of eating organic local foods.  Yes, organic can be more expensive, but in the long run is it really?  Think about how much money it costs to treat a disease.  So every time we shop we either invest in our health or our sickness, which one do you choose?

It boils down to choice and that one degree of change.  It is not difficult.  It is truly about wanting something better for yourself.  I don't care how wealthy you are, you cannot buy your health.  Treasure your health after all you are responsible for it, no one else can do it for you.

Purification Week Two!

This group of participants has been amazing.  The sharing of recipes and support has been so wonderful to be a part of as a practitioner.  The premise of the Purification Program is formulated around the "One degree of Change".  That one degree of change can be as simple as adding one new food into your diet, drinking more water, drinking one less soda a day, walking 10,000 steps a day or buying local produce.  During my morning workout, I was thinking about how one degree of change has been a big part of my life.  I look back through the years, I smile at how all the "one degree of change" has affected my life.  As a pilot the one degree of change in my flight plan can take me in a new direction.  I have applied this simple technique in my career by taking that one degree of change by taking the time with patients to remind them to feed their bodies properly.  Personally, I made a change in our household by composting all the kitchen leftovers to reduce our carbon footprint.  Ten years ago when I began my first purification program, I stopped drinking soda and diet soda.  Physically, a created a fitness plan that incorporated exercise into my morning everyday of the week.  I also adopted a habit of saying ten things I am grateful for each morning, my gratitude list.

This is one of the posts from a couple doing the Standard Process Purification Program together:

"36 1/2 years ago when we got married my husband asked me to never make him brussel sprouts as he couldn't stand them. Easy enough for me to agree to as I also can't stand them. Well, 1 degree of change, tonight was the night. I decided to roast brussel sprouts, asparagus (which I have never made before either), eggplant, mushrooms, broccoli, and onions. I didn't tell him and just put the plate in front of him. It was delicious!! He didnt' know he was eating the brussel sprouts and really liked the meal. Once I told him he was shocked. We have leftovers and are both looking forward to eating it!! 1 degree of change works!!"  J W

Week Two of My Journey

With the beginning of week two is our first weigh-in.  I was excited and nervous, what if all my work didn’t yield results?  I noticed my breathing as I stepped on the scale, three pound loss! Whew…. I was pleased to see progress and it immediately fueled my spirits.

During this class, we learned the importance of exercise.  Since we used to be hunters and gatherers walking to seek food, to now having the ability to drive up to a window for it, our physical activity has almost ceased to exist for most people.  We learned that we should take at least 10,000 steps a day.  There is a lot of technology today that can help us with tracking our movement such as phone apps and tools like the Pulse.

I also learned that most of us are committing a crime when we eat.  We are guilty of DWE, Drinking While Eating.  When we consume liquid while we are eating, we dilute our digestive fluids making it more difficult for our body to properly digest food.

Dr. B also taught us to sit down and enjoy our foods.    To take time to chew our food properly.  To put our fork down between bites. To give thanks for the land, the farmers, and the person who prepared the meal.

Week Two brings a change in supplementation.  We switch from using SP Cleanse to SP Green Food for the next two weeks.  This helps continue the phase II detoxification of the liver at a time when the liver is removing toxic byproducts of the initial toxins.  This is the time when the chemical and environmental toxins accumulated by the liver are being purged.  Participants are feeling lighter, have clearer thinking, sleeping well and less joint pain.  These are all symptoms of toxicity.

I am so proud of my groups.  What could your "One degree of Change" be for this month?

Let the Journey Begin! Week One of the Standard Process Purification Program

Let the Journey Begin!

The Purification journey has begun for my two offices.  Each time I teach a class, I come home and say to my wife, " This is the best class ever!", and I have done it again.  I love teaching my passion of health and nutrition.  Both of my groups are doing so well.  They have entered into their second week of the program.  I have a patient that is journaling her experience and I was given permission to share her experience.  I feel it is important that you hear it from the patient stand point, not just mine. Here is the start of her journey on the Purification Program!

Patient C
My 21 day cleansing journey
I agreed to take on Dr. B’s challenge of the Standard Process Purification Program.  I was at a crucial point in my life.  I had a lot of personal challenges and with that comes stress.  I had gained about 15 lbs. and I wasn’t feeling very confident or good about myself.  At first I was very excited about it.  I read the program outline, researched recipes and made shopping lists.  As the start date neared I would call Dr. B with excuses, I worried because I can’t be cranky I am starting a new job, I have adrenal fatigue I don’t think it’s a good idea, etc.  Dr. B’s response was the same to each “this is perfect time and exactly what you need.”  The day of the cleanse I caught myself having a hissy fit! How am I going to live without coffee?  Great now I have to cook 2 meals instead of one! How am I going to live without sugar and bread?  I had to stop and check in to see really what was going on.  I then realized I was scared, what if I fail, what it…. fill in your blank.  In that moment I realized “The Purification Program” is more aligned with the way I truly want to live my life and I needed to do it.  That day I headed to the first cleansing class, still not convinced that I wanted to be there.  By the time I walked out I felt empowered and confident that I could indeed be successful!

The first day the hardest thing for me was giving up my morning coffee.  I had weaned it down prior to starting, but I actually like the way coffee taste so much so I drink it black.  I can’t believe I actually made it through a day without it!  I did have a slight headache, but my sense of accomplishment far outweighed the consequence.  I truly didn’t think I could ever give up coffee even though I deep down I really wanted to for my overall health.    My second day was a little more challenging because I was tried, ache and had brain fog.  Since that day I have noticed that my energy is increasing and my thoughts where becoming clearer.

Attending the classes is a crucial part of the program.  We learned great information; why cleansing is necessary, nutrition, and recipes.  But the most important piece Dr. B shared was with us was being prepared.  She told us to take time to plan out 3-4 days in advance and to always have healthy snacks with you.  This was a lifesaver for me when my boyfriend said yes to a last minute football game gathering at his sister’s house.  I had prepared some items ahead so I packed my own food and we headed over.  There was a lot of temptation with alcohol, snacks and BBQ.  It was hard not to surrender to the peer pressure and cravings.  If I hadn’t been prepared I could have sabotaged it all in second.  All the hard work and dedication I had put into myself the days prior.  Think of the feast of self negative talk I would have had.  As the days are passing I am feeling my confidence in successfully completely not only the next few weeks, but a new way of living!

I will keep you posted on her progress!

Let the Purification Program begin!

This marks my 10th year teaching the Standard Process Purification Program.  It all started when I had an increasing number of patients telling me they felt toxic, just not well.  Their medical doctors told them their blood work was within normal range and there was no apparent health issue.  Time after time, this became a usual complaint in my office, "Dr. B, I just fell toxic, I can't explain it!"  So became my quest: to solve the issue of toxicity.

My studies in nutrition and toxicity ramped up.  I was hungry for the knowledge.  I spent most weekends in nutrition courses to learn every morsel about the liver and how it governed most functions in the body.  After over 1000+ hours in nutrition coursework, a certification as a Functional Medicine Practitioner and pending (waiting to take the boards) Diplomate in Clinical Nutrition, I feel humbly prepared to offer exquisite Wellcare to my patients.  Every discussion with my patients includes ideas, examples, education and advice on how to feel well, eat well, think well and move well.

This mission is what inspired me to search for a process to help patients with their "toxicity". I spent a long, inquisitive weekend at our FCA (Florida Chiropractic Association)
convention on the quest for a process to take care of the "toxic waste" in my practice.  And, "Wow" was there some product information available.  So I took the time to listen, read and devour the information.  The one program that stood out to me was the Standard Process Purification Program (originally call the Detoxification Program).  Three reasons that I was attracted to this particular program: 1. The SP products are organic, whole food supplementation, 2. The program was 21 days.  I know that it takes 21 days to change a habit., and 3.  It accomplished Phase I and II liver detoxification.  Not to mention that it also lowered cholesterol and my participants lost weight.

I'm not trying to be an infomercial, but I am in love with this program.  So much that I have personally done the Purification Program for the past 11 years, 2-3 times per year.  I can tell you that I have changed the way that I eat and have subtracted items that were causing damage.  These items have not returned to my diet since that first detox program.  So when introducing the program to my patients, I wanted them to know that I practice what I preach.  Thus I began teaching the Purification Program.  I designed a four week program that included the Purification kit, recipes, shopping list, instruction each week, an initial weigh in which included weight, BMI and % body fat, and then a weekly weigh in.  So began and continues, our Biannual Purification Program.

I will give you a weekly recap of our current classes.  We have two offices, so we have two classes of unique participants (mostly patients, but a few outside people).  My Eustis office wanted to connect on Facebook, so we created a secret page to share recipes, ask questions and celebrate wins.  My Winter Park office includes several husband and wives, doctors and other professionals.  Both groups are eager and are almost through their first week.  Stay tuned, we have a video to post, it is long but it was recorded during the first class.  I will present their success and hopefully minimal failures!  Here's to a healthy liver!
